ABOUT BATCHELOR HEIGHTS
Batchelor Heights sits on the hills above Brocklehurst on the north side of Kamloops, between North Kamloops and Westsyde, with the Lac du Bois grasslands along its western edge. The official place name is Batchelor Hills, after Owen Salisbury Batchelor, a rancher and miner who died in 1933, and the City adopted a land use plan for the area in 1997.
Most of the neighbourhood is newer construction on curving streets, and the City's plan noted it grew significantly in the decade before 2018. Grasslands Boulevard, finished in 2017, links Batchelor Drive to Westsyde Road and gave the hill a second way in and out. Groceries and shopping are down the hill at Northills and in Westsyde.

Contact JeremiaWhere is Batchelor Heights?
Batchelor Heights is on the north side of Kamloops, on and below Batchelor Hill north of Brocklehurst. Batchelor Drive climbs into it from the bottom of the hill, and Grasslands Boulevard connects it to Westsyde Road. Downtown is roughly 10 to 15 minutes away, and BC Transit routes 14, 80 and 81 serve the hill.
Who lives in Batchelor Heights?
Mostly families. The streets are newer, the schools are nearby, and the views over the North Thompson valley draw buyers who want a city address with open grassland behind them.
What is the lifestyle like?
Trails out the back door. The Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area borders the neighbourhood with the Mara, Dewdrop and Grasslands Community trails, Batchelor Nature Park is in the neighbourhood, and the Rivers Trail and McArthur Island Park are a short drive down the hill.
What are the properties like?
Mostly detached homes from the last few decades, with some townhomes and duplexes. On a hillside lot, look at drainage, retaining walls and the slope behind the house. The grassland edge is wildfire interface: a 2018 grass fire just west of the neighbourhood put 12 homes under tactical evacuation, with no damage reported.
Schools and services
Westmount Elementary (kindergarten to grade 7) serves much of Batchelor Heights, and since 2022 the upper parts of the hill go to David Thompson Elementary or Westsyde Elementary. All three are in the Westsyde Secondary family of schools. Confirm the school for a specific address with School District 73. Groceries and pharmacies are down the hill at Northills Shopping Centre and in Westsyde.

WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT THINK TO ASK
On Batchelor Heights the slope and the grassland behind the house matter as much as the house. Ask whether a geotechnical report or a covenant about the slope is registered on title, look at the retaining walls, and watch how water drains off the lot in spring.
Check how close the back fence is to open grass, because that edge is where wildfire risk and insurance questions start, and get a quote early. Drive both routes off the hill, Batchelor Drive and Grasslands Boulevard, so you know your second way out. I have 18 years in construction and I am not a licensed home inspector, so I will tell you when to bring one in.

REAL ESTATE INSIGHTS
Buying or selling rural property raises questions that city listings never do: wells, septic, who plows the road, what the ALR allows.
The blog takes them one at a time, in plain language, from someone who has lived on rural property since 2008.
